Project summary:
The European Commission contracted the Food Chain Evaluation Consortium to conduct an evaluation of Regulation (EC) No. 1829/2003 on genetically modified food and feed, which pursues the global objective of ensuring a high level of protection of human life and health, animal health and welfare, environment and consumer interests in relation to genetically modified food and feed, whilst ensuring the effective functioning of the internal market. The Food Chain Evaluation Consortium evaluated the legal instruments of the European Parliament and of the Council on genetically modified feed and food; the risk assessment and regulatory approval processes; the compulsory labelling of GM food and feed; the "emergency measures" on authorized GMOs; and the socio-economic consequences for stakeholders.
